This is the story of how I discovered Software Defined Radios (SDRs) and eventually found my way into the world of Amateur Radio.
In September 2020, I was visiting a close friend of mine, Marty (N5SXV), when an Amazon package arrived at his door. After he opened the box, I looked inside and asked, “What in the world is that?”
With a grin, Marty replied, “My friend, this is a Software Defined Radio.”
At that moment, I had absolutely no idea what a Software Defined Radio (SDR) was. Little did I know that simple conversation would ignite a fascination with SDR technology and set me on a journey that continues to this day.
As I began learning about SDRs, I quickly discovered that radio signals are all around us. From aircraft and weather satellites to amateur radio, public safety, and countless other wireless communications, I realized there was an invisible world waiting to be explored. Every new discovery led to another question, and my curiosity only grew stronger.
Along the way, I developed a deep interest in Amateur Radio and earned my Amateur Extra Class license in September 2023. Becoming a licensed amateur radio operator opened the door to even more opportunities to learn, experiment, and connect with others who share a passion for radio communications.
As my knowledge and enthusiasm for SDRs continued to grow, I wanted to share what I was learning with others. In September 2024, I launched my YouTube channel, @paulmaine6433, where I publish videos covering Software Defined Radios, Amateur Radio, satellites, signal processing, and other fascinating topics related to the radio spectrum.
My goal is simple: to make SDR technology approachable, educational, and fun for anyone who is curious about the invisible signals that surround us every day.
Whether you’re completely new to SDRs or an experienced radio enthusiast, I invite you to join me as we explore the amazing world of radio signals together. There’s always something new to discover.
